EXAMPLE OF DUTIES The attorneys in the Civil Rights Unit (not to be confused with the Wing Luke Civil Rights Division) defend the Department of Corrections and its employees in civil rights actions, Public Records Act cases, and personal restraint petitions related to prison conditions.
These cases range from straightforward condition of confinement claims to complex class action and other system reform litigation.
The attorney hired will also advise the Department of Corrections on issues related to prison operations, public records, and/or civil rights.
In addition, attorneys in the Civil Rights Unit assist in prosecuting community supervision violations before the Indeterminate Sentence Review Board.
The Civil Rights Unit consists of 11.
5 attorneys located in Olympia and Spokane.
The attorney hired for this position will be located in Olympia, WA.
The duties for this position will include: Drafting pleadings, motions, and briefing in civil matters in state and federal courts, including appeals;Propounding and responding to written discovery;Taking and defending depositions;Appearing in court for motions practice, trials, and appellate arguments;Working with Community Corrections Officers to prosecute community supervision violations at hearings held inside prisons and jails throughout the State;Working closely with professional staff to accomplish litigation goals and meet all deadlines;Working closely with Department of Corrections employees to investigate claims and gather evidence; andCommunicating with incarcerated individuals and opposing counsel about their claims and litigation against the State.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION This Assistant Attorney General position is represented by the Association of Washington Assistant Attorneys General (AWAAG) / Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE) AFSCME Council 28, AFL-CIO.
AAG salaries are set between $74,520 and $139,572.
The exact amount is set in accordance with Appendix B of the AWAAG CBA.
