The Opportunity WSDOT’s Environmental Services Office (ESO) is seeking a currently enrolled college student or recent graduate to serve as a Hazardous Materials (HazMat) and Solid Waste Environmental Intern at the Transportation Planning Technician 1 level.
This intern will provide supporting information to technical and regulatory specialists to assist with the ESO Hazmat Program’s project delivery and compliance.
This environmental internship will provide you the opportunity to gain valuable experience in the practical application of planning procedures, concepts, and techniques in an on-the-job environment.
What to Expect Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the HazMat and Solid Waste Environmental Intern will: Assist ESO HazMat Program Team members with the field work to be performed, such as documentation, field investigations, sampling, labeling, chain of custody documentation, picture taking, data filing, and other similar work.
Gather supplies, fill out chain of custody forms, take photographs, record site conditions and notes, upload and label photos taken, transport supplies to designated points and truck, and provide other fieldwork preparation assistance and support.
Upload and assist customers with uploading completed Good Faith Investigations (GFI) reports and other HazMat documentation into the ECM Portal.
Respond to customer inquiries about retrieving GFI and other records that have previously uploaded into the ECM Portal.
Assist ESO HazMat Program with preparing reports, briefings, and presentations.
Gather and compile data and information, write sections of reports and other documents, develop presentation slides and speaking points.
Qualifications To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required: High School Diploma or GED.
Completion of at least two (2) semesters or three (3) quarters (or equivalent) of study in natural or physical sciences, environmental studies or policy, computer science, statistics, or a closely related field at an accredited college, university, or community college.
Valid driver’s license.
Ability to manage and organize complex tasks simultaneously.
Ability to meet deadlines and prioritize work assignments.
Ability to work in large and multi-cultural settings in a cooperative manner.
Ability to research and summarize information in a clear and concise manner.
Ability to use a personal computer (PC) to evaluate data, prepare and generate reports, use spreadsheets, use databases, and prepare electronic documents and presentation slides.
Ability to clearly understand & communicate in English in person, in writing, and on the telephone.
Ability to perform hands-on work in all weather conditions during field testing and site remediation work.
Ability to travel occasionally within Washington State to meet with customers, perform field work, conduct business, or attend or provide training.
Travel may include overnight stays.
