The OpportunityWSDOT is currently seeking a Transportation Planning Specialist 2 to serve as a Multimodal Planner in Olympia, WA.
The top candidate will participate in transportation planning projects and GIS analysis to support the delivery of long-range plans, such as the Highway System Plan or the Washington Transportation Plan, and the development of statewide policy.
Transportation planning activities may include writing, analysis, community engagement, carrying out the completion of projects, and summarization of transportation data.
What to ExpectAmong the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Multimodal Planner will: Apply planning methodologies and accomplish portions of studies with senior team members for statewide multimodal efforts.
Propose outlines, write sections, apply formatting and style, perform calculations, check results, query data, and perform other tasks to support plans and policy development.
Participate in preparation of community engagement plans.
Accurately record and summarize conversations, decisions, meetings, and forums.
Translate between technical and nontechnical information and develop reports for a wide variety of audiences.
Draft communication pieces (slides, maps, charts, handouts, and written materials).
Summarize findings and analysis for review by senior team members.
Conduct analysis of transportation data sets including agency programs, transportation systems and modes, planning, engineering, economic and statistical data.
QualificationsTo be considered for this opportunity, one of following is required: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university involving major study in transportation or in urban, regional or land use planning, landscape architecture, engineering, public policy, or a related field of study AND two (2) years’ professional planning experience that includes conducting planning studies.
ORGraduate degree from an accredited college or university involving major study in transportation or in urban, regional or land use planning, landscape architecture, engineering, public policy, or a related field of study AND one (1) year of professional planning experience that includes conducting planning studies.
ORFive (5) years of professional planning experience that includes conducting planning studies.
In addition to above, the following are also required: Understanding of transportation organizations, planning and performance measurement principles, and performance standards.
Understanding of transportation system analysis, analytical processes, research methods, databases, and transportation theory, application, and techniques.
Ability to clearly convey information and ideas through a variety of media to individuals or groups in a manner that engages the audience and helps them understand and retain the message.
Ability to proficiently use Microsoft Office Software.
Ability to manipulate and analyze datasets and create reports for internal and external audiences.
Ability to occasionally travel in-state to meet with internal and external stakeholders.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have: Experience using data systems, analytical processes, analysis methods, transportation theory, application, and techniques to support transportation policy.
Experience conducting quantitative and qualitative analysis, identifying data trends, inconsistencies, inaccuracies, or incomplete information for complex analysis topics.
Experience using GIS to communicate highly technical and complex data sets to a non-technical audience.
Certification or licensure, such as American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP).
Ability to speak or write a second language or ASL.

This position requires occasional in-state travel to meet with internal and external stakeholders.
In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
