Description About WSDOT Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is the steward of an integrated, multimodal transportation system that helps to ensure people and goods move safely and efficiently throughout the state.
In addition to building, maintaining, and operating the state highway system, WSDOT operates the largest ferry system in the nation, manages the world's longest floating bridge, and recently completed the world's widest tunneling project.
The Opportunity WSDOT is currently seeking a Transportation Engineer 3 to support the agency’s mission and the Olympic Region Environmental & Hydraulics Services Office by serving as a technical and regulatory specialist in the field of hydraulics.
The position provides hydraulic related reviews, analysis, and services required to support compliance with environmental regulations including the Clean Water Act, National Environmental Policy Act, Washington State Hydraulic Code, State Environmental Policy Act, National Pollution Elimination System, and WSDOT policies and guidance.

What to Expect Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Senior Hydraulic Engineer will: Review hydraulic reports, and plans for adherence to all laws, ordinances, and regulations as well as Departmental directives and policies.
Provide recommendations for corrective action related to hydraulic work.
Support design staff on hydraulic design of highway drainage and stormwater management facilities.
Advise and direct development of temporary erosion and sediment control plans, spill containment and control plans and narratives to meet agency policy and National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permitting requirements.
Evaluate condition and operation of existing hydraulic and stormwater facilities, assesses impacts and/or damage to highway drainage facilities and adjacent properties, and makes recommendations on modifications or repairs.
Provide hydraulic and hydrology related technical review and recommendations.
Field investigations, while administrative in nature, may be conducted within a field site, roadway, construction, or right-of-way inclement weather.
Qualifications To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required: Certification as an Engineer In-Training AND One (1) year of experience as a Transportation Engineer 2, Transportation Technician 3, Bridge Engineer 2 or equivalent.
OR Two (2) years’ experience as a Transportation Engineer 2, Transportation Technician 3, Bridge Engineer 2 or equivalent.
OR A Master’s degree with major study in civil engineering, structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, soil mechanics, traffic, transportation or a closely related field.
In addition to one of the above, the following are also required: Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of hydraulics and hydrology as applies to highway engineering.
Ability to work effectively both individually and within a diverse team environment.
Experience adhering to safety policies and diligence in performing work in a safe manner.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing across a broad spectrum of professional levels and diverse groups, other agencies, and the public.
Experience working independently and prioritizing workload to complete multiple work assignments proactively, efficiently and within established deadlines.
Proficient in operating Windows based computers and software, such as MS Office Suite, including Excel, Word, SharePoint, and Outlook; Cloud computing; and virtual meeting software, such as MS Teams.
Proficient with computer software and skills to analyze data, prepare, and generate reports in spreadsheets and databases.
Possession of an unrestricted valid driver’s license to operate vehicles in Washington State.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have: Four (4) year college degree with major in civil engineering or related field.
Engineer in Training certification.
Demonstrated proficiency and working knowledge of WSDOT’s Highway Runoff Manual and Hydraulic Manuals.
Two (2) years of hydraulic engineering experience.

In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
